Velimir Petkovic: "The guys were crying. Their tears — a real reward for the input of efforts"

The former head coach of the national team of Russia Velimir Petkovic told Handballfast author Bojan Soc about the farewell with the players after the final match as a head of the team.

 — We did a great job indeed and finally became a real team. I was touched when I saw at least eight players in tears after my last match as a head of the team.

It was in March in Chekhov, when we defeated the team of Belarus with a difference of nine balls (37:28 — Handballfast). After the final siren I gathered everyone in the locker room and said it was my last match as the head of the national team. And although I had already announced my departure before, when a two-meter guy with 120kg of muscles hugs you, you understand that you had left something good after you, managed to find a way to the soul of this man and had worked not in wain.

Indeed, guys were crying, this is how love is expressed, and these tears are a real reward for the input of effort. It means, that I wasn’t the one, brought by the Federation leadership, and I was the one, who became the part of that environment and who made a family from the team. Despite my age, it was hard to see their tears. I don’t even know how I managed to finish my speech, — Velimir Petkovic shared.
