17 January the President of Handball Federation of Russia Sergey Shishkarev met with the Minister of Sports and Youth of Iran Seyed Hamid Sajjadi in Tehran.

Igor Levitin, the Aide to the President of the Russian Federation and the First Vice-President of the Russian Olympic Committee also was present at the meeting.

The participants of the conversation discussed the current issues of interaction in the sports sector, specifically in handball. In particular, the parties considered the possibility to hold friendly matches with participation of the men’s national teams from both countries. Iranians are competing at the World Championship now and managed to get to the main round of the tournament. Moreover, the Minister of Sports and Youth of Iran invited the women’s national team of Russia to take part in a friendly tournament, where the national teams of former Soviet republics are also expected to be involved.

Sergey Shishkarev and Seyed Hamid Sajjadi also discussed cooperation in the field of scientific and methodological support, exchange of coaching staff, marketing, issues concerning holding friendly matches between children’s teams, junior and youth national teams of Russia and Iran.

— It’s important to find new opportunities to keep high competitive level in the situation of restrictions, imposed on Russian national teams and clubs. And strong sparring partners are necessary for that. I consider cooperation with Iran in this regard to be interesting and promising. Their men’s national team shows decent performance at the World Cup and has already moved from the group to the main round, and I congratulated Mr. Sajjadi on it. Women’s handball in Iran is not progressing so quickly, but the leadership is going to get serious about it and to take a step forward in the nearest future. I suppose, our meeting with Seyed Hamid Sajjadi turned out to be constructive and useful for both sides.
